Sardinia still maintains many places almost intact that bear witness to its prehistoric landscape: these are areas in which pre-existing archaeological structures have been preserved and partly brought to light, in many cases in an intense relationship with the natural element. The universities of Cagliari and Sassari are committed to valorising and systematizing this landscape for the purposes of its candidacy as a UNESCO heritage site. As professors involved in this research, we consider it important to open the experience to our students and share with them part of the operational moments and the results of our efforts. This year's Laboratory will therefore be dedicated to the design of an archaeological area in the south of the island, in direct physical contact with the coast and visual contact with the panorama of the Gulf : the area is that of the Nuraghe Diana in Quartu S. Elena. Here there are remains of a medium-sized nuragic structure, with a multiple layout plan and a central Tholos space. The nuraghe is partly destroyed and is surmounted today by a watchtower built during the Second World War. The area is called Is Mortorius from the name of the granite promontory dominated by the nuraghe. In the cliffs beyond the provincial road there are other structures for defense and sighting, now in ruins, also built during the war. Students are asked to intervene by designing light structures that configure a path to approach the nuraghe, keeping their distance from it and taking care to achieve maximum integration with the landscape. The architecture must effectively serve all the required practical functions, including that of signaling the area as a space served and equipped for visits, but it must do so by reducing the impact of its image to the minimum possible.

La Sardegna mantiene ancora quasi integri molti luoghi che sono testimonianza del suo paesaggio preistorico: si tratta di aree in cui preesistenze archeologiche sono state conservate e in parte riportate alla luce, in molti casi in un rapporto intenso con l’elemento naturale. Le università di Cagliari e Sassari sono impegnate nella valorizzazione e messa a sistema di questo paesaggio ai fini della sua candidatura come patrimonio dell’Unesco. Come professori impegnati su queste ricerche consideriamo importante aprire l’esperienza anche ai nostri studenti e condividere con loro parte dei momenti operativi e gli esisti dei nostri sforzi.

Il Laboratorio di quest’anno sarà perciò dedicato alla progettazione di un ambito archeologico del sud dell’isola, in diretto contatto fisico con la costa e visivo con il panorama del Golfo degli Angeli: l’area è quella del Nuraghe Diana a Quartu S. Elena. Qui si trovano resti di una struttura nuragica di media dimensione, con pianta a schema plurimo e con spazio a Tholos centrale. Il nuraghe è in parte distrutto e sormontato oggi da una torretta di avvistamento realizzata durante le Seconda guerra mondiale. L’area è denominata Is Mortorius dal nome del promontorio granitico dominato dal nuraghe. Nelle scogliere oltre la strada provinciale sono presenti altre strutture per la difesa e l’avvistamento oggi in rovina, sempre realizzate durante la guerra.

Agli studenti è richiesto di intervenire progettando strutture leggere che configurino un percorso di avvicinamento al nuraghe, tenendosene a distanza e preoccupandosi di realizzare la massina integrazione con il paesaggio. L’architettura dovrà con efficacia servire tutte le funzioni pratiche richieste, compresa quella di segnalare l’area come spazio servito ed attrezzato per la visita, ma dovrà farlo riducendo al minimo possibile l’incidenza della sua immagine.
