A university team work, coordinated by professors Pier Francesco Cherchi and Marco Lecis, researched on architectural and typological features, defined the principles of settlement and the design lines for a new hospice structure in the Municipality of Settimo San Pietro, overseeing to the subsequent phases of project development and implementation. The structure, dedicated to the terminally ill, is organised on two levels: a lower one, partially underground, and an upper one, surrounded by a garden. The lower floor houses the main entrance, the chapel, a meeting room, offices, technical rooms, clinics and the morgue; the upper one is dedicated exclusively to hospitalization and has 15 rooms and a large connective hall with areas for relatives and the sick. The rooms can be perceived from the outside as distinct volumes, with reduced dimensions and in direct relationship with the garden: this characterization has been studied in order to privilege a domestic dimension and a strong integration with nature. We wanted to avoid the configuration of a single imposing volume, immediately evocative of an hospital institution. The specific nature of the building and the conditions of its guests have pushed to study carefully the character of the spaces with the aim to evoke, in a dimension as far as possible informal, the continuity and constancy of the cycle of natural life.

Il gruppo di lavoro dell’università, coordinato dai professori Pier Francesco Cherchi e Marco Lecis, ha condotto le ricerche sui caratteri architettonici e tipologici, definito i principi di insediamento e le linee progettuali caratterizzanti una nuova struttura hospice nel Comune di Settimo San Pietro, sovrintendendo alle fasi successive di elaborazione del progetto e realizzazione. La struttura, dedicata ai malati terminali, si articola su due livelli: uno più basso, parzialmente ipogeo, e uno superiore, circondato da un giardino. Il piano inferiore ospita l’ingresso principale, la cappella, una sala riunione, uffici, locali tecnici, ambulatori e la morgue; quello superiore è dedicato esclusivamente alla degenza e ospita 15 stanze e un ampio ambiente connettivo con aree per i parenti e per i malati. Le stanze sono percepibili dall’esterno come volumi distinti, di dimensioni ridotte, in relazione diretta con il giardino: questa caratterizzazione è stata studiata al fine di privilegiare una dimensione domestica e di forte integrazione con la natura. Si è voluto evitare la configurazione di un unico imponente volume, subito evocativo della destinazione ospedaliera. La particolare natura dell’edificio e le condizioni dei suoi ospiti hanno spinto a studiare con attenzione il carattere degli spazi che intendono evocare, in una dimensione per quanto possibile informale, la continuità e la costanza del ciclo della vita naturale.
